Butterflies Take Flight in the Garden
The Somerset-Bridlewood Community Association with the support of the Calgary Foundation is planning to beautify our local community garden space by bringing butterflies to the garden!
We want this project to be more than just making the garden pretty, we want to engage the community, bring people together and get them talking about urban gardening, responsible land stewardship and the importance of nurturing a respect for the environment.
We have several hundred wooden butterflies to be decorated and attached to the fence surrounding the garden. In addition to the butterflies, we are installing garden beds specifically for flowers which are edible and attract beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies. We hope to make our garden an educational as well as beautiful place.
Our garden is located at 100 Somervale Drive SW, in the park next to the Somerset-Bridlewood C-Train station. We currently have 21 garden beds but are planning to renovate the space over the next two years to include benches, pergolas, fruit trees, and additional beds. We want our garden to become a focal point for community activity, engagement, learning and togetherness.
Last year we installed a Little Free Library next to the playground adjacent to the garden, which we regularly stock with books for children in multiple languages, as well as a selection of adult novels on a variety of topics. The library is very well used and often we see families gathered together to read. This is the type of community involvement we wish to foster.

How Can You Help?
We are looking for groups (minimum of 5) or community based organizations such as schools, Girl Guides/Boy Scouts, or senior's residences who interested in decorating the wooden butterflies to be installed on the garden’s fence. We will bring everything you will need to paint the butterflies and can work with your schedule.
